The singularity of Cai Guo-Qiang exhibition at Fundación Proa – extraordinary  not only for the works, but also by the process of exploration, development and production that the artist made in Argentine - also deserved a book of unique features.

In this book on Impromptu, uniqueness is twofold. First, because all texts are manifestations of self-assembled Cai Guo-Qiang, without the intermediation of critics and curators: four interviews with the artist in various parts of the world, one granted exclusively while he was in Argentina, and that includes their acute and hilarious conclusions about our history and culture. The other unique contribution of this book is an exhaustive directory of images of the entire creative process of Cai, from dive trips in the landscape, through the sketching and performing with the help of local collaborators, to the finished piece in the exhibition hall. The photographic monitoring of an artist like James Porter and self curating images by Cai Guo-Qiang guarantee the documentary value of this material.

The miraculous surprise of the catalog are "The 99 stories of Cai Guo Qiang" which are actually 63 autobiographical stories organized around three themes: childhood and training of the artist in the spirituality of Chinese cosmology, memories the completion of the Project for Extraterrestrials series, and the creative process works in ideas and materials incorporating feng shui, chi kung, and Chinese medicine. Moreover, the stories are illustrated with images of works selected by the artist to these texts.

This book ends, condenses and crystallizes the collective experience of the visit of Cai Guo-Qiang to Argentina, another country where this globetrotting art have left their mark.
