Fundación Proa and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston presented the 5th edition of the festival Latin Wave. New Films from Latin America, sponsored by Tenaris y Ternium.
The 5th edition of the festival Latin Wave was launched between April 29 and May 2, and presented distinguished independent films from Latin America that had not yet been officially released in the United States.
The goal of Latin Wave is to spread the extraordinary creativity and notable depth with which the artists relate the problems of Latin America. The festival is directed by Monika Wagenberg, a distinguished promoter of the cinema on our continent.
It was planned from the very beginning to have representative filmmakers available for discussion with the audience after the screenings. Latin Wave grew with each edition and is currently considered one of the most distinguished festivals in Houston and an absolute must-see for the local cultural comunity. A regular public from the diverse comunities that live in the city is present each year in order to meet in person with the protagonists of Latin American cinema.

Among the filmmakers that talked to the audience were Pedro González-Rubio, director of the award-winning film Alamar; Oscar Ruíz Navia, director of El vuelco del cangrejo; Javier Fuentes-León, director of Contracorriente; y Mariano Llinás, who moved the audience that appreciated his four-hour film Historias Extraordinarias.
The launching of Latin Wave and its opening summoned more than two thousand young people who attneded the inauguration party in the halls of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
Monika Wagenberg said, “This year´s edition of Latin Wave presents a large number of operas primas by first-time filmmakers, something that has become a tradition of the festival. All the films have competed at the most prestigious international festivals, many with great success.”
