A ContraCOOLtural Chair
CÁTEDRA DISEÑO DE MOBILIARIO - LICENCIATURA EN DISEÑO - UTDT
November 29 – December 14
Organized by: PROA21 – Universidad Torcuato Di Tella
Sponsored by: Tenaris – Ternium
PROA21 and the Cátedra de Diseño de Mobiliario at the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella present A contraCOOLtural Chair, an exhibition showcasing the final projects developed by students, each involving the creation of an original chair made in diverse materials.
With a curatorial focus on process, the exhibition brings together materials that trace the journey from idea to object across its various stages: theoretical research and reference mapping; critical conceptual development; material exploration; prototype building; and the fabrication of a full-scale model. From beginning to end—and back again—the completed chair is revealed through the 1:1 prototype created by each group; conceptual boards outlining the theoretical framework, countercultural references, and design decisions; process journals detailing advances, reversals, and paths shaped through reflection and dialogue; and audiovisual material documenting phases of fabrication and material experimentation.
A concise yet evocative premise guides the students’ design process: a countercultural chair. Throughout the project, they study, articulate, and explore how objects and aesthetics can operate as acts of resistance to dominant logics or as challenges to prevailing cultural norms. Each group finds its own way for the chair to express critique—through form, function, material choices, modes of production, or the relationship between object and body.
This institutional collaboration is grounded in shared principles: the exercise of critical thinking, interdisciplinary encounters, and the experimental spirit that defines the space’s exhibition projects. Throughout its history, Fundación Proa has fostered connections with university programs in art, architecture, and design, as well as with the theoretical frameworks that inform these fields. Continuing in this line, PROA21 develops exhibition projects in collaboration with faculty and students, seeking to bridge academic work with the management of artistic and cultural initiatives within institutional contexts. Likewise, at UTDT—through the Cátedra de Diseño de Mobiliario in this case—students are encouraged to engage in learning experiences that involve interaction with social actors beyond the academic sphere, supporting their growth and the possibility of contributing to the community.
A series of public programs led by faculty and students, in collaboration with PROA21, activate the pulse and vitality of these works, which—far from being mere consumer objects—condense sensitive and intellectual processes that resonate deeply within the cultural landscape.
