The Incas: Beyond an Empire
From the gallery to the page, the publication edited by Proa to accompany the exhibition “The Incas: Beyond an Empire” is an essential resource for students, artists, scholars, and anyone interested in the ancient civilizations of the Americas.
Around 2018, the directors of the Lima Art Museum (MALI), Peru, began conceptualizing an exhibition on the Incas that would challenge prevailing narratives and reframe the collective imagination about this astonishing and enigmatic civilization. The texts included in this publication expand on the themes developed with this objective, providing context for the selection of archaeological pieces and artworks presented in Buenos Aires by Fundación Proa.
Archaeologists and art historians Cecilia Pardo, Julio Rucabado, and Ricardo Kusunoki, curators of the exhibition, take the reader through the long and fascinating (and often challenging) journey of bringing the idea to fruition in the museum. They address key guiding questions for the teams involved: Who were the Incas? How can we confront myth with archaeological evidence to discuss their origins? What strategies were used to form and expand such a vast empire? And how has the modern perception of them been shaped?
Photographic images of the works are also included, making this book a testament to an exceptional heritage.
