INTRODUCTION
CREAR MUNDOS (CREATING WORLDS)
On November 14th, 2020, Fundación Proa reopened its doors with the exhibition Crear Mundos (Creating Worlds). With the academic advisory of Dr. María Laura Rosa and the curatorship of Cecilia Jaime and Manuela Otero, the exhibition explores the works of fifty female artists who have been part of Fundación Proa’s history throughout the years. The title of the exhibition is based on a passage from theoretician Donna Haraway’s book Staying with the Trouble (2016): “(…) what matters we use to think other matters with; (…) what stories we tell to tell other stories with; (…) what stories make worlds”.
With art history as a basis and through different disciplines, such as video, photography, installation and performance, the different artists reflect upon the issues surrounding matter and elements of daily life, the relationship with the space, the subtleties of language and the body as a place –as support, matter and metaphor– throughout the different generations and cultures of the world.
Fundación Proa was created in 1996, with a view to disseminating the major artistic movements of the 20th and 21st centuries, by reflecting the diversity of visual languages–photography, video, installations, design, performance– and supporting the execution of special projects. A large institutional archive was developed simultaneously to harbor the documentation of local and international artists featured in the vast number of exhibitions showcased at Proa. Crear Mundos delves into the work of women artists who have exhibited their work at Fundación Proa throughout its 24 years of existence, to reflect upon their contribution to contemporary art history and consider the unique, global nature of the issues affecting women in the field of art.
The exhibition is supported by the Mexican Embassy in Argentina and sponsored by Tenaris, Organización Techint. It will be open to the public until the end of February 2021, Thursdays to Sundays from 12 to 6 pm at Fundación Proa.
