Kara Walker: The Past on Stage

In this class, we delve into the world of artist Kara Walker, on the occasion of her exhibition at Fundación Proa. We will explore the work of this key figure in contemporary art, from her beginnings and connection with drawing to her celebrated paper cut silhouettes and prints. The session examines how her work confronts the memory of slavery, racial stereotypes, and the tensions between history, power, and imagination. The class was led by Noemí Aira, a member of Fundación Proa’s education team.

Kara Walker and African American Art, by Rodrigo Alonso

Contemporary art specialist Rodrigo Alonso offered a reflection on the contexts in which Walker’s work is produced within the broader landscape of North American contemporary art. His talk also examined the work of other African-descendant artists and a selection of Latin American cases. In addition, the encounter included a discussion of the São Paulo Biennial as a space of resonance and renewal for these issues in contemporary art.
