Presentation

Artists’ Film International (AFI) is a collaborative project created by Whitechapel Gallery, now coordinated by Forma. Since 2008, it has brought together a group of institutions annually with the aim of presenting a multiplicity of cultures through video art. The program offers a contemporary overview of the diverse forms of audiovisual culture, exploring the boundaries of video art, artist films, and exhibition cinema.

This year, the curatorial theme chosen by the participating institutions is solidarity, presented through projects by selected artists. On this occasion, Fundación Proa showcases the work Dos personas (2018) by Argentine artist Lihuel Gonzalez. This audiovisual project brings two people together for a conversation. Zhang Jing Yan and Renaud Semper do not know each other beforehand; they only know that their conversation partner does not share their language but does share their need to emigrate to another country. The dialogue unfolds spontaneously, creating what the artist describes in the synopsis as "a catalog of gestures, tones of voice, and linguistic similarities that help decode what the other is saying and attempt to generate a new code to communicate." Dos personas offers a perspective on the feeling of uprootedness, the challenges of understanding others, and the entire process of adapting to a new culture.

The exhibition possibilities of videos produced by artists worldwide open up new experiences and opportunities for video art. On this occasion, Proa inaugurates a schedule of screenings in the PROA21 exhibition space.
