Whirligig accompanies the realization of the site-specific work of the same name created by Dan Graham for the forecourt of Fundación Proa in 2019. Published as part of Proa’s editorial program, the volume brings together a selection of the artist’s key writings, essays, and conversations that illuminate his career and his contributions to Conceptual Art, Post-Minimalism, and the intersections of art, architecture, and public space.
Taking Whirligig—a circular structure of two-way mirrors that transforms the viewer’s perception of both the surrounding environment and their own body—as its point of departure, the book offers a broad introduction to Graham’s thinking. It includes reflections on his celebrated magazine works, landmark texts such as Homes for America, and writings on his pavilions and spatial interventions, tracing more than five decades of artistic production. Rather than serving as a catalogue of a single work, the publication functions as an introduction to the intellectual universe of one of the most influential artists in contemporary art.
