About Forensis
{NOTA_BAJADA}

Forensis is Latin for “pertaining to the forum” and is the root of the term forensics. The Roman forum was a multidimensional space in which humans and objects participated in politics, law and the economy. With the advent of modernity, ‘forensics’ shifted in meaning to refer exclusively to the domain of law and to the use of science in courts. It became central to the ways states police and govern their subjects, and, through its representations in mass media, a defining feature of contemporary culture. Returning to the wider concepts of forensis, however, this exhibition seeks to unlock the potential of forensics as a public, political practice.

This exhibition presents the work of Forensic Architecture, a unique forensic agency composed of architects, artists, filmmakers, theorists, lawyers and scientists, as well as that of its close collaborators and guests. Forensic Architecture is a counter-forensic agency that seeks to invert the direction of the forensic gaze in order to confront abuses of power by states and corporations in situations that bear upon political struggle, violent conflict, and climate change.

Forensic Architecture examines buildings, ruins, cities, satellite imagery and increasingly an emergent type of testimony: images and clips taken by citizens and uploaded online. The evidence is put at the service of international prosecution teams, political organizations, NGOs, and the United Nations. From the drone warfare in the frontier regions of Pakistan, through the forests of Central and South America, to the battlefields of Israel-Palestine, the exhibition shows how exposing the logic of violent conflict raises a host of theoretical, historical and aesthetic questions to do with the thresholds of vision and law.
