Reconocido artista de la transavanguardia, o resurgimiento expresionista italiano.
Estudió en el Istituto d’Arte, e ingresó en la Accademia di Belle Arti de Florencia, obteniendo un diploma en 1969.
Viajó por India, Turquía y a través de Europa antes de establecer su residencia en Roma en 1970, donde expuso en numerosas ocasiones, así como en el resto de Europa.
Habiendo obtenido la escolaridad de la ciudad de Mönchengladbach en Alemania, trabajó allí durante un año para trasladarse posteriormente a Nueva York (1981-82).
Actualmente vive y trabaja entre Nueva York, Montalcino, y Roma.

De chico vivió con su tío, trabajando entre otras cosas como restaurador de libros. Es allí donde comienza su acercamiento también a la pintura como autodidacta. Sin embargo muestra en sus comienzos alguna indiferencia por esta actividad atraído más bien por la poesía. Es recién a mediados de los setenta con sucesivos viajes a Roma donde comienza nuevamente su interés por la actividad artística, y es aquí justamente donde se encuentra con los artistas Sandro Chia y Francesco Clemente con los que comienza a trabajar.
De sus primeros trabajos se impone la originalidad por sobre las tendencias predominantes de fines de los sesenta. Adoptando el “experimentalismo” como método, Enzo Cucchi recupera también el medio expresivo tradicional para hacer arte utilizando gran diversidad matérica para sus obras.
Actualmente vive y trabaja en Ancona y Roma, ciudades fuente de su inspiración.

Pintor italiano que adquirió fama internacional a principios de la década de 1980 con la aparición de un movimiento de pintura figurativa conocido como neoexpresionismo. Es célebre por la elegancia de su dibujo y la mezcla onírica de psicología personal, historia cultural y simbolismo religioso.
Tras diplomarse en la escuela media superior, empieza a pintar como autodidacta y escribe y publica poesías; en 1970 se traslada a Roma para inscribirse en la facultad de arquitectura y entra en contacto con varios artistas entre los cuales cabe citar a Cy Twombly y Alighiero Boetti, que influencian los inicios de su carrera artística.
En 1973 viajó por primera vez a la India, país que visita con frecuencia.
En 1979 se acerca al movimiento de la transavanguardia, cuyo teórico es el crítico Achille Bonito Oliva, y se convierte en uno de los máximos exponentes junto a Chucchi, Chia, De Maria y Paladino, con los cuales realiza una exposición en Colonia.
A partir de los años 80 obtiene un gran éxito internacional en un momento histórico en el cual los artistas reaccionan al dominante movimiento conceptual.
En 1980, la obra de Clemente se expuso en la Bienal de Venecia junto con la de otros tres artistas jóvenes italianos: Sandro Chia, Enzo Cucchi y Mimmo Paladino. Estos artistas, junto con otros estadounidenses, como Julian Schnabel y David Salle, y alemanes, como Jorg Immendorf y Georg Baselitz, llegarían a ser conocidos como los neoexpresionistas.
Sus obras aportaron una vitalidad renovada a la pintura de la década de 1980, con representaciones audaces de la figura humana y cuadros que aludían a un amplio espectro de referencias culturales e histórico-artísticas.
En 1980 se trasladó a vivir a la ciudad de Nueva York. Sus lienzos de la década de 1980 están plagados de referencias mitológicas y alegóricas así como de tradiciones religiosas orientales y occidentales. Sus figuras son terrenales y espirituales al mismo tiempo y reflejan el ciclo de la vida humana desde el nacimiento hasta la muerte, haciendo frecuentes alusiones a las actividades sexuales y otras funciones corporales. La propia imagen de Clemente suele aparecer en sus obras. Por ejemplo, en She and She (1982, Colección Marx, Berlín, Alemania) dibujó su cara, la afeminó y la multiplicó varias veces.
Clemente tiene estudios en Madrás (India), Nueva York y en Roma. Las diferentes influencias de dichos entornos se yuxtaponen y se alimentan unas a otras en su obra, como puede apreciarse en cuadros como Francesco Clemente Pixit (1981, Museo de Bellas Artes de Virginia, Richmond, Virginia), compuesto de 24 miniaturas realizadas al estilo de la pintura clásica de la India; Las catorce estaciones, nº IV (1981-1982, Galería Saatchi, Londres) y Frescos de la piscina (1982, colección particular, Suiza).
A principios de la década de 1990 creó una importante serie de lienzos de grandes dimensiones titulada Las pinturas negras, compuesta de varias piezas unidas en las que se representan imágenes derivadas tanto del arte indio islámico como del hindú.

Junto a artistas como Sandro Chia, Francesco Clemente, Enzo Cucchi y Nicola de Maria protagoniza en la década del ‘80 el movimiento conocido como Transvanguardia italiana. Estos artistas, reunidos alrededor de la figura del crítico Achille Bonito Oliva, proponen un retorno a la pintura en respuesta a lo que consideran un agotamiento definitivo de los planteos innovadores de las vanguardias. La cita histórica, la mixtura de lenguajes, el apego a la sensualidad son algunas de las características que los definen. La obra de Paladino, desde sus primeros dibujos de los ‘70 hasta sus telas y montajes actuales, permite observar una continuidad que, más allá de la variedad de referencias y soportes, se verifica en una concepción de carácter dramático, a menudo sádica o mortuoria y “gustosamente catártica” de la materia pictórica (en palabras de G. Dorfles). Conjuga elementos de las vanguardias con atmósferas meridionales cargadas de connotaciones mágicas y ancestrales, donde aparecen animales extraños, cráneos y cuerpos descarnados que refieren a ciertas esculturas de madera de tradición popular. Emerge así de sus pinturas un carácter mítico que rechaza cualquier interpretación unívoca.

Nicola De Maria ha vivido en Turín desde que era niño. Aunque se graduó en medicina, especializándose en psiquiatría, nunca trabajó como doctor dedicándose de lleno a la vida artística. Comienza haciendo trabajos en fotografía a mediados de los setenta, para luego dedicarse momentáneamente al dibujo, primero en lápiz y posteriormente en pastel, óleo y acuarela. Rápidamente comienza a pintar sobre pared y pinturas pequeñas sobre tela. De esta manera De Maria encuentra en la pintura el idioma más apropiado para expresarse y es por este medio que entra radicalmente en el mundo del arte.
En 1977 De Maria completa su primer fresco que pinta en Milán y, en el mismo año, pinta otro fresco para la París Biennale. De Maria trasciende la lona extendiendo por el espacio de exhibición el color con técnicas de frescos utilizadas por los grandes maestros italianos.
