Between Saturday, September 19th and Sunday, January 3rd (2010), FUNDACION PROA presents the exhibition In the Time of Art:Masterpieces from the 16th to the 21st Century.
Organized by Giacinto Di Pietrantonio, a leading curator, art teacher and Director of the GAMeC, (Bergamo Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art), the exhibit In the Time of Art offers more than 100 works, a journey through five centuries of transcendental images in the history of art.
The curatorial proposal organized the exhibition in eight cores referring to universal human subjects: Power, Everyday/ Life, Death /Body, Mind /Love, Hate. In each of these groupings, the works demonstrate awareness of the way in which the artists created concepts and images that allow us to link the past and present.
The exhibition’s design accentuates these dialogues between 16th century works and those from the present day, in addition to traditional painting proposing different media such as photography and video.
FUNDACION PROA’s presentation of these older works, patrimony of Bergamo’s Accademia Carrara, must be appreciated as a unique moment now that the historic site is closed for repairs. This occasion allows for the touring of this remarkable patrimony and the arrival of such high quality works to Buenos Aires.
Dating back as far as 1500, works by Tintoretto, il Veronese, Tiépolo, along with those of Kosuth, De Chirico, Jeff Wall, Morandi, León Ferrari, Velázquez, and many other prominent artists will be available for viewing in this exhibition in a bold new dialogue.
The cores are divided throughout the four exhibition rooms and are enriched with outstanding didactic commentaries.
The catalog "In the Time of Art" is a publication of 192 pages in full color with reproductions of all the works from the exhibition. Each illustration is accompanied by an art historian’s commentary, helping to better understand the visual universe shaped by the artist. Accompanying the curator's essay is a theoretical text written by Georges Didi-Huberman, reflecting on the capacity of the image to survive over time.
Proa’s educational department developed a careful guided-tour program for both the general public and students of all levels.
The exhibition is sponsored by Tenaris and the Techint Organization, and has the support of the Italian Embassy in Argentina and the Italian Cultural Institute of Buenos Aires.
In the Time of Art: Masterpieces from the 16th to the 21st century presents a journey through five centuries of history. This cared-for edition contains two theoretical texts and a body of more than 110 illustrations that document the passage of time with amazing reproductions.
Giacinto Di Pietrantonio’s text is a reflection on the contemporary perspective on art history, with an emphasis placed on current textual forms that propose fresh readings, not only of the images themselves but also of the essays that analyse them.
Also included is a chapter from Georges Didi-Huberman, The history of art as anachronistic discipline, from the book In front of time. This piece, graciously provided by the Adriana Hidalgo Editorial, examines the profound linkages between art and time.
This edition is thus proposed as a profound and novel reading of the ways that art from different periods has represented the most important and transcendental issues of man, establishing similarities and differences, while also significantly leaving its mark on the pathways of our culture.
