Biografía
Ron Mueck nació en Melbourne, Australia, en 1958. Hijo de jugueteros, desde pequeño, entre títeres y disfraces, convivió con técnicas asociadas a dar vida objetos inertes. Sin ninguna clase de formación artística formal, desde niño dedica su tiempo al modelado de figuras, vocación que luego desarrolla dentro la industria del cine, la televisión y la publicidad, como realizador de efectos especiales y creador de personajes.
Trabajó en programas de televisión durante años antes de entrar en efectos especiales para cine, como es sabido trabajó en los personajes de Laberinto (1986), un film de culto épico-fantástico protagonizado por David Bowie.
A partir del año 1996, colaborando con su suegra Paula Rego produciendo pequeñas figuras como parte de una escena que ella estaba mostrando en la Galería Hayward, comienza a abandonar progresivamente la producción de maquetas y modelos para cine y televisión. La transición de artesano a la de artista se completa cuando es descubierto por Charles Saatchi, quien comienza a coleccionar sus obras y lo consagra como valor en alza. Saatchi elige Dead Dad , una escultura hiperrealista de pequeña escala del padre de Mueck muerto y desnudo, en la exhibición Sensation en el Royal Academy en 1997. Esa exposición incluyó también a otros “nuevos” artistas británicos como Damien Hirst y los hermanos Jake y Dinos Chapman, que llevan su quehacer a extremos definitivamente estremecedores.
Luego, en 2001, Mueck obtiene gran aceptación internacional y se destaca desde ese momento como uno de los artistas más originales del arte contemporáneo con Boy, un enorme niño agazapado de cinco metros de altura que se exhibió en el Milenium Dome y en la 49 ª Bienal de Venecia.
Ron Mueck no brinda entrevistas, incluso en el período previo a una nueva exhibición.
Hoy vive y trabaja en Londres.
