Urgent Action
by Cecilia Rabossi y Rodrigo Alonso
This exhibition explores the practices and actions of interdisciplinary artist-activist groups from the countries of the Southern Cone (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay) during the period that spans from the end of the military dictatorships in the region to the present, including the years that witnessed transition to democracy. The show consists of a concise selection of groups that took part in what was a widespread and vital phenomenon throughout the region.
These artists’ collectives have formulated an array of direct action strategies for aesthetic and political experimentation in the public space: performances, urban interventions, actions in places of protests and demonstrations, occupations of community spaces, communication tactics that range from works of Mail Art to social networks. Insofar as they make highly political works of collective creation at the margins of art institutions, works that make use of the mass media in their production, communication, and circulation, these groups question the notion of individual authorship.
“The works of these groups respond to immediate socio-political contexts and challenge naturalized conducts with proposals that address—among other things—gender issues, racial discrimination, indigenismo, political inequality, and alienation. They question the art institution as well as certain social structures but, unlike activist groups, their critical moment lies in poetic actions.”
