Leo Estol performs on Duchamp´s “Bicycle wheel”
A few days before the closing of Duchamp´s exhibition at Proa, the artist Leopoldo Estol approached spontaneously to Proa and made an intervention on “Bicycle wheel”.
“Once, coming back from Lobos, I bought a worn out bike in front of the train station. One day in January I went to see the Duchamp exhibition, and I confess that was able to spin the wheel on the sly and not get caught, it was a very intense moment!”, Estol admits on the root of his idea. “On my way back, I read that Duchamp said that spinning the wheel was a little like watching fire, a never-ending image”, the artist continues.
Regarding the preperation for his intervention, Estol relates: “After seeing the exhibition, I took the bike I had bought in Lobos apart and went to Floresta in search of a stool. It was amazing the amount of care and details I had to take into consideration in order to see the wheel spinning in my house. And then the moment came: “One day I gathered up courage and let two friends know I was going to take my wheel to the Proa entrance. I let my two friends know, I arrived with my stool, and a bag of lots of things that I always carry around to alleviate my thoughts. Slowly, I started taking them out in front of Proa.” He finally explains, ” to re-do Marcel`s wheel it to be a student again, its an exercise, to follow his steps a bit closer”.
About his experience at Proa, Estol comments that “it was a great afternoon, because many people approached to touch the wheel, a boy made it so many times that he almost got hurt, a cat was round there all the time and the people tought it was part of my performance, and a girl passing by gave me a piece of bread as a gift!”.
