The participation in the 1980 Venice Biennale confirms this as one of the clearest referents of the new international expressionism. In these works multiple references to diverse cultures can be seen: from American Pop to Spanish art, from Latin American murals to the use of digital photography. Similarly, the techniques used in these works are multiple and quite out of the ordinary. In the work exposed here we find an antique reproduction pasted in the style of collage. Time and the historical paradox of the work emerge from the contrast between the representation and the figure of power, rigid and in profile, as was customary with celebratory portraits. The writing is disorderly and clearly from the Pop mold; indeed, “the banana is good” creates a shortcircuit between past and present, and in so doing transforms the meaning of the work.
