This work, attributed to Tintoretto and unfortunately damaged visibly on its right-hand side, is included in the portrait gallery celebrating power. The profound capacity for psychological introspection found in the portraits of the famous Venetian painter was  often, and particularly in this case, rooted in the subject’s gaze and associated with the face that emerged from a dark background and, in so doing, attracted attention to him. The eyes that appear marked by experience and the wisdom of having seen, heard and learned, leaves the Order of the Maltese Cross, visible symbol of power and honor for the noble Venetian, very much in the background.
