The piece is actually a body of works that shows a series of responses the artist has inferred from observing passersby, chosen at random, whom are asked to write their thoughts on a scrap of paper. It is precisely the common person, the vox populi, that has always been the object of Wearing’s works. The result of these photographs invariably is to create an interpretive short-circuit, based on the distance that exists between the written message and the appearance of the individual represented, such as in the photograph “I’m desperate,” which was transformed into an icon for the project as a whole.
